Joe's Personal Story

Over three years ago, I made the most significant decision of my life. I decided to join the WI Army National Guard because in serving my community I can find purpose. This decision was not taken lightly. I was inspired by the selflessness and dedication of the men and women in uniform, and I wanted to contribute to the safety and well-being of my community in a meaningful way. Getting through One Unit Station Training over five and a half months to become an Infantryman was my most challenging life experience, but it's been enriching. A few months ago, the WI Supreme Court, in a landmark decision, forced the State Legislature into adopting Tony Evers' Redistricting Maps out of fear that the Court would impose a map that would be politically worse for them. This decision was a victory for fair representation and was a turning point for me. When that happened, I saw another opportunity to serve my community.

My time in Boy Scouts growing up has left an indelible mark on my character and values. The Boy Scouts instilled the virtue of service, a tenet I have taken to heart. Their motto, 'Be prepared,' and the principle of leaving no trace, have guided my actions. While I sometimes need help being prepared, the outdoor ethic of leaving no trace has dramatically influenced my political beliefs. In practice, leaving no trace means leaving your surroundings better than when you found them. I believe it is my responsibility to pick up the garbage in our society, whether literal or figurative. In politics, this translates to advocating for change, proposing new legislation, and working to repeal or amend existing laws that do not serve our community's best interests. My goal is to leave Wisconsin better than I found it.
